கட்ச் மகாராணியின் கற்பு சூறையாடப்பட்டதாலேயே, விஸ்வநாதர் கோயில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது

ஒளரங்கசிப் மீது சுமத்தப்படும் குற்றச்சாட்டுகளில் மிக முக்கியமானது ஒளரங்கசிப் வாரணாசியில் உள்ள விஸ்வநாதர் ஆலயத்தை இடித்து தரைமட்டமாக்கினார் என்பதாகும்.

ஆம் அது உண்மையே! அந்த உண்மைக்குப் பின்னால் மறைந்து இருக்கும் உண்மை என்னவெனில், பேரரசர் ஔரங்கசிப் தனது படை, பரிவாரங்கள் சிற்றரசர்கள் ஆகியோருடன் வங்காளம் நோக்கி வாரணாசி வழியாக சென்று கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வாரணாசியை நெருங்கியவுடன், பேரரசர்  ஒளரங்கசிப்    அவர்களுடன் வந்த இந்து மன்னர்கள் தாங்கள் கங்கையில் முழ்கி தமது கடவுளான விஸ்வநாதருக்கு தமது வணக்கதை செலுத்த விரும்புவதாகவும், ஆதலால் தாங்கள் ஒருநாள் இங்கு தங்க எமக்கு உதவி புரிய வேண்டும் எனவும் வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்க அந்த வேண்டுகோளை ஏற்று, ஒளரங்கசிப் அவர்களின் இராணுவம் வாரணாசிக்கு ஐந்து மைல் தூரத்தில் முகாம் அடித்து அங்கே தங்கினார்கள்.

அனைத்து மன்னர்களும், பரிவாரங்களும் கங்கைக்கு சென்று நீராடி விஸ்வநாதர் கோவிலில் பூஜை புனஸ்காரங்கள் முடித்து முகாமிற்கு திரும்ப (இன்றைய) கட்ச் வளைகுடாவின் மகராணி மட்டும் திரும்பவில்லை. பதற்றம் மேலோங்க எங்கு தேடியும் எந்த தகவலும் இல்லை.

இந்த செய்தி ஒளரங்கசிப் அவர்களுக்கு தெரியவர, கவலை கொண்ட பேரரசர் தனது மூத்த உளவு அதிகாரிகளை அனுப்பி தேடுதலில் ஈடுபட கட்டளை பிறப்பிக்கிறார். கங்கை கரை, விஸ்வநாதர் ஆலயம் என ராணி பயணித்த இடங்களில் தேடுதல் நடத்த தன்னிச்சையாக விஸ்வநாதர் ஆலயத்தில் நகரும் தன்மையுடைய யானை முகம் தரித்த பிள்ளையாரின் தலைமட்டும் உடைய ஒரு சிற்பம் பொறுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதை காண்கிறார்கள்.

அதிகாரிகள் அந்த சிற்பத்தை நகர்த்திய பின் சிற்பத்தின் கீழிருந்து கருவறையான விஸ்வநாதர் பீடத்திற்கு செல்லும் இரகசிய அறைக்கான படிக்கட்டுகள் தென்படுகிறது.

அந்த படிக்கட்டுகள் வழியே சென்று பார்த்தவர்களுக்கு பேரதிர்ச்சி காத்திருந்தது.

ஆம் கட்ச் வளைகுடாவின் மகாராணி அழுகை மேலோங்க, ஆபரணங்கள் இழந்து, பெண்மையின் கண்ணியம் சிதைக்கப்பட்டு காட்சி தந்துகொண்டிருந்தார்.

இவைகள் எல்லாம் கருவறையில் வீற்றிருந்த விஸ்வநாதர் சிலைக்கு நேர் கீழ் பாதாள அறையில் அரங்கேறி இருந்தது.

கட்ச் வளைகுடாவின் மகாராஜா பேரரசரிடம் நீதிகேட்டு முறையிட, ஒளரங்கசிப்   அவர்கள் இந்த சம்பவத்தின் மூலம் விஸ்வநாதரின் புனிதம் கலங்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது என்றும் விஸ்வநாதர் சிலையினை வேறு ஒரு இடத்தில் நிறுவச் சொல்லியும் உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்தார்.

மேலும் அசம்பாவிதம் நடந்தேறிய விஸ்வநாதர் ஆலயத்தை தரை மட்டமாக்க சொல்லி கட்டளை பிறப்பித்ததோடு, அந்த ஆலயத்தின் தலைமை குரு கைது செய்யப்பட்டு தண்டிக்க பட்டார் என்பது பதிவு செய்யப்பட்ட வரலாறு.

Why did Aurangzeb Demolish the Kashi Vishvanath?

Much has been said about Aurangzeb's demolition order of Vishwanath temple at Banaras. But documentary evidence gives a new dimension to the whole episode.

What follows is the theory launched by B.N. Pande, working chairman of the Gandhi Darshan Samiti and former Governor of Orissa:

The story regarding demolition of Vishvanath temple is that while Aurangzeb was passing near Varanasi on his way to Bengal, the Hindu Rajas in his retinue requested that if the halt was made for a day, their Ranis may go to Varanasi, have a dip in the Ganges and pay their homage to Vishwanath.

Aurangzeb readily agreed. Army pickets were posted on the five mile route to Varanasi. The Ranis made a journey on the Palkis.

They took their dip in the Ganges and went to the Vishwanath temple to pay their homage. After offering Puja all the Ranis returned except one, the Maharani of Kutch.

A thorough search was made of the temple precincts but the Rani was to be found nowhere. When Aurangzeb came to know of it, he was very much enraged. He sent his senior officers to search for the Rani.

Ultimately, they found that the statue of Ganesh which was fixed in the wall was a moveable one. When the statue was moved, they saw a flight of stairs that led to the basement.

To their horror, they found the missing Rani dishonoured and crying, deprived of all her ornaments. The basement was just beneath Lord Jagannath's seat.

The Rajas expressed their vociferous protests. As the crime was heinous, the Rajas demanded exemplary action.

Aurangzeb ordered that as the sacred precincts have been despoiled, Lord Vishvanath may be moved to some other place, the temple be razed to the ground and the Mahant be arrested and punished.
